Brompton Cemetery: A New Sensory Museum Bridging Death and Culture

Project details

Programme

Through the investigation of death culture, the interaction between the place of death and the urban environment is rethought and reimagined within this framework. The research is structured in four parts.

  1. The three phases of death culture, including physiological, social, and memorial phases.
  2. The characteristics of cemetery architecture in different national and religious contexts, with Brompton Cemetery in London the primary focus.
  3. Burial culture and the links between Brompton Cemetery and historic changes from an urban perspective.
  4. The significance of Brompton Cemetery's gradual memorialisation as a monument in the development of London.
