The Grenfell Tower Fire: A Visual Analysis of Tangible and Intangible Causes

Project details

Programme

In June 2017, Grenfell Tower, situated in the Notting Dale ward of North Kensington, caught fire resulting in the deaths of 72 people. The subsequent Grenfell Inquiry Phase 1 identified a series of tangible failures both leading up to and on the night of the fire, including what appears to be one of primary causes, the installation of a highly flammable cladding system. Whilst the enquiry focused on the tangible evidence such inadequacies in the fire response, my research into historic deprivation, racism and housing issues in North Kensington suggests an entrenched lack of equity in Kensington and Chelsea was the principal reason for the tragedy. The project is an illustrative interpretation of how the data supplied in the official written reports informs the detailed account of key events on the night of the incident. Historic information was collated using historic maps, and archival material. Structured as a broad overview of the social, geographic and historic aspects of the site, the project then delves deeper into a micro view of the first hour of the fire.

The research maps and documents the first hour of the response, contributing a visual narrative of the official data provided by the LFB report on the fire.
