Hainault Forest in North London is surrounded by mainly agricultural land, with residential and industrial areas to the west of the site. The prominent issues are waterlogging and the lack of recreational gathering areas.
This project uses a combination of wetlands and bioswales to address the waterlogging issues. The bioswales collect and transport rainwater, which is then purified in the expanded wetlands and flows into the lake.
Measures to address the lack of recreational gathering areas include the expansion of the farm to include more animal species, the addition of a cafe and shop to sell farm produce, and a dedicated picnic and camping area for people to relax on weekends. The flower strip allows people to move freely and enjoy the flowers throughout the seasons, while a hedge maze attracts young children.
