The neglected ancient woodland of Cefn Mably is situated in Wales, between Caerphilly and Cardiff. The design focuses on a nature trail to provide a unique experience for locals and visitors that will immerse them in a natural, cultural, and educational experience.
The local community has an emotional attachment to the woods that they call ‘hiraeth’. This Welsh word describes both a yearning for home and homeland and a nostalgia for how things were once. The trail helps people focus on the trees and the intricate ecology of the forest, redirecting such yearning into a productive relationship.
The value of ancient woods is not only ecological: social, spiritual, archaeological, and economic values are also attached to it. The technical focus behind this inspiring green lung is to respond to Welsh reports on climate breakdown and make the forest more resilient by tackling the site-specific and major impacts of environmental catastrophe.
The board follows the order of the trail. It explores different experiences and activities for locals and visitors.
This zone includes new planting zones and the timber production area, with a small-scale forest nursery. The drawing reflects the proposal, phasing, and the processes of logging.
The kit is designed for visitors to gain an insight into the forest. Brochure 1 provides an introduction, while brochure 2 has details of the trail. The flashcards are inspired by Jane Wolff’s Bay Lexicon.
