Cwmcarn Forest Renewal

Project details

Programme

Year 2

The Cwmcarn Forest area in Wales, known as both a recreational destination for families and hikers and as a source for the UK timber industry, has suffered from Larch disease, caused by a microorganism called Phytophthora ramorum. This damaged and killed more than 150,000 larch trees in 2013.

As a result of the unpredictable infection, the Welsh nationwide strategy states that all larch trees must be felled to stop the disease from spreading. The area must then be reforested. It is an opportunity to introduce new species that are less susceptible to the disease, increasing the biodiversity of the area.

This project focuses on the root cause of the massive forest renewal project. The interventions prevent the forest-wide spread of the pathogen by introducing water canals to evacuate the infected run-off water from the site. Moreover, the planting areas are divided into sectors to support selective logging and further control the disease. Lastly, the pathways are redesigned to enhance the visitor experience, while scientists and the introduction of logging routes will reduce cross circulation across the site.

The physiographic diagram shows the surface layer, composed of sandstone, extending across the Bristol Channel. The site is located on the northwestern side of Newport, Wales.

The first section of the walk consists of the route through the oak forest, which is less susceptible to tree diseases. This route also has a gradual incline and stable paving, making it suitable for almost every visitor.

The new viewing decks are designed to allow users to experience the stunning panorama of the Cwmcarn valley. The floors, made of steel grating, minimise the permeability of the forest surface.

Monitoring larch disease and logging timber is the ultimate goal of the Cwmcarn Forest.

The Hidden Disciplines

The site plan includes the development of pathways to serve more users. The hidden routes for scientific research and logging reduce cross-circulation between different routines.
