Highgate Wood is home to more than 950 species and is of great ecological value. It is a typical ancient oak woodland accompanied by boxwoods and includes more than 50 species of trees and shrubs. However, due to human activities on the playing fields and in decaying areas, the soil is heavily trampled, which changes its infiltration rate. At the same time, the topsoil is washed away by surface runoff, removing large quantities of nutrients. Consequently, the plants gradually fail to grow.
This project provides a different nature experience for families while prioritising soil improvements. The project proposes a new woodland route that is linked by three themes: 1. managing nature, 2. relaxing in nature, and 3. surviving. The most important part of the route is the central area, as the playground is moved to the centre while the café area is expanded to make the family experience more complete.
The education centre runs regular educational outreach activities where the family can get involved in the day-to-day management of Highgate Wood and learn how to manage nature.
At the central café and playground, everyone can relax together in nature.
The whole route connects the three key areas: the education centre, the central café and playground, and the camping site.
