Beyond the Route: Jubilee Greenway

Project details

Year 1

Jubilee Greenway is located in Newham, East London. Although the area is an ideal candidate for ecological regeneration, cemeteries and sewage facilities were developed in the past first rather than considering green areas. The area’s population is steadily increasing due to urban expansion, and the London Olympics reorganised the area around the stadium, but most of the eastern part of the site is neglected.

The overall goal is to develop a new route and programme for the Jubilee Greenway based on hiking experiences to revitalise existing sites that used to be monotonous. The site was constructed as an 18th century sewerage project but was built at ground level rather than underground, forming a barrier on the landscape. This project aims to provide hiking experiences by taking advantage of the limitations and characteristics of this place, and to expand connections with the surroundings to transform it into a space where people can gather. It hopes to become an area that can be opened to various visitors beyond local residents. The project also hopes that this change can lead to interest in places that have been alienated and excluded.

The project aims to allow empirical change when "migrating" a natural landscape to a new place. Expectations, discoveries, meandering, enjoyment, achievement are feelings generated by the hiking experience.

Designed to provide a view of Canary Wharf and a gathering space, the gradually changing topography of the area and the unexpected scenery creates an expectation for the Jubilee Greenway hike.

Exposing the existing infrastructure helps the understanding of the site. A mound and meandering path have been created to remind people of the hiking experience, and the brick is used as a material to connect the past and the present.

Considering constraints regarding demolition due to sewage pipes or surrounding residential areas, the level change that has been raised and lowered is presented horizontally.
