Landscapes of Scale and Performance

Project details

Year 1

Sizewell nuclear power station is situated in a vast coastal landscape with seemingly ungraspable scales—the massive structures of the power station have been designed in such a way as to diminish the perceived visual scale of the buildings and blend them into the horizon. This project aims to further play with perception and human scale by using techniques of performance and film, engaging the body as a relational tool to explore illusory perspectives. The design scope considers how the environmental fluctuations of wind, tide, sediment, and time affect the human experience. Analysing these changing conditions, the project culminates into a manipulation of the landscape’s topography with interventions that fluctuate within the site’s fabric, emphasising certain scales and opening new perspectives.

Landscapes of Scale and Performance: Sizewell A

Landscapes of Scale and Performance: Sizewell A

A series of films in front of both power stations explores the scale and experience of the site. The series of films convey the depth of the site and the illusory perspectives of the power stations.

Notational drawing of scale and movements from the film. I used my body as a relational tool to guide the viewer into experiencing the dune landscape. The performances began in front of Sizewell A where I progressively walk closer to the buildings.

As the design develops, the topography transforms and reacts to the forces of wind, tide and sediment deposition. The shifting topography creates a datum of the landscape which continuously fluctuates with the elements.

Winter Conceptual Drawing

The design aims to create moments of reflection and open up perspectives accentuating different scales of the landscape and its ecosystem.
