Strathspey Railway is an old steam train railway in the UK. As a heritage railway, it attracts tourists from all over the world to experience this steam train journey. The railway is located in the Scottish Highlands, which is also a great platform to present the Highlands’ picturesque landscape to travellers from different regional cultures. Throughout this train journey, people will see that there are a large range of heather moorland surrounding the railway. Heather, as a unique plant species with instantly recognisable purple flowers is regarded as a symbol of the Scottish highland landscape. Burning heathland is also a special practice within the culture of the Scottish Highlands.
This project focuses on the special culture of heather burning that takes place in the Scottish Highlands. However, there is a lot of controversy about heather burning. Some people support heather burning, while others are against it. This project takes a steam train journey through the Scottish Highlands to explore whether people should burn heather, providing e a forum for discussion among relevant policy makers, ecologists, landscape architects and travellers from around the world.
