The woodlands of the Goyt Valley have been affected by a disease brought by the algae-like organism phytophthora ramorum. As a result, woodlands need to be felled, while the local peatlands have been subject to extraction for many years; all this has been contributing to the erosion of the valley, a popular hiking destination in the Peak District.
This project aims to heal the valley by addressing the processes affecting the soil, converting the existing woodland into a biodiverse forest, and designing a colourful moss garden to divert hiking trails to reduce the pressure from tourists and hikers visiting the valley in large numbers every year. In addition to the restoration of the lost forest, reuse of the fallen wood forms a wood cemetery that buries the dead wood, essential for carbon sequestration.
