Since the 1960s, the Royal Docks have been one of London’s urban voids.
Intervening with a less artificial approach to “let nature do her work”, this project responds to Julia Czerniak’s question “how much design is enough”. The softer the surfaces, the greener the site will become; therefore materiality becomes an important aspect of this intervention.
From functional public spaces to green plantings and habitats, the proposal will ensure the site will contribute to capturing CO2 while allowing the area to constantly change and evolve.
Deconstructing the site and reusing materials allows the public to engage in various ways. As time goes by, strategic design intervention leads to a mature habitat establishment, making it a real “green lung for the future”.
All the patterns buried underneath are bought up to the surface. Functional spaces are used as tools to reflect history.
Calculating the carbon offset helps to contribute to a “Green Lung” effect.
